Nicholas Armstrong

Originally from Northern Wisconsin, Dr Armstrong graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, graduating with honors and AOA recognition. He then completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. with multiple teaching and resident awards. Dr. Armstrong is board certified in General Surgery for the past 26 years. He is currently the Chief of Surgery at St Luke's Medical Center and is the Section Head of the Complex Abdominal Wall surgery division. Dr Armstrong is a clinical adjunct Professor of Surgery for the University of Madison-Wisconsin. He is the program director of the Complex Abdominal Wall surgery fellowship, which starts in 2025. He has been honored to be named one of the "Best Doctors in Milwaukee' for many years running (Castle-Connelly).

The abdominal wall surgery division of Aurora Surgical Specialists and Dr. Armstrong provide expert treatment of the entire spectrum of abdominal wall hernias, inguinal hernias, hiatal hernias and other sites of hernia disease. In addition, they routinely treat complex/recurrent abdominal wall defects, abdominal wall tumors and abdominal wall fistulas/infections/open wounds. They evaluate many patients who are suffering complications from prior surgeries, including previous bariatric operations, often in combination with abdominal/incisional hernias. They also evaluate patients who have chronic pain or other problems related to prior surgery, including problems that might be related to prior hernia surgery and/or mesh placement.

One of their focused areas of interest includes complex/recurrent abdominal wall incisional hernias, which can often be accompanied by other medical and surgical issues. Dr. Armstrong's experience, as a regional and nationally recognized abdominal wall reconstruction expert, is based on very extensive clinical practice, as well as current evidence-based practice and up-to-date clinical information. In addition, they have very extensive experience in the treatment of infected abdominal wall mesh (following previous hernia surgery). The surgical approaches that they utilize include open surgery, laparoscopic procedures and robotic interventions. They strive to provide comprehensive management of Hernia Disease, including a thorough preoperative evaluation, evidence-based surgical treatment and long-term clinical follow-up.

Dr. Armstrong was involved in the evolution of the current practice of abdominal wall surgery and often presented at professional meetings and teaching labs around the country and internationally. He is an adjunct editor for the Journal Hernia.
